Thatcher Clay Studio is a small ceramic studio founded in 2023 by Derek Thatcher. We have seen our pottery community grow and flourish over the past few years, and are committed to helping others find their artistic peace through the hands-on experience of working with clay.

Derek Thatcher
Founder & Owner
Derek Thatcher is the owner of Thatcher Clay Studio. He graduated from the University of California Santa Barbara with his Bachelor’s in Psychology. After living around the states and abroad for a number of years, he eventually settled in Westport, CT. At the beginning of 2023, Derek made the career switch from working in the mental health field to buying a pottery studio in Newtown, CT in order to pursue his longtime passion for making and teaching ceramics. The idea of combining artistry with functionality drew Derek to the ceramic medium and in particular the potter’s wheel. The majority of his art is wheel-thrown and he draws inspiration from nature, wildlife, and the human psyche when sculpting and altering his wheel thrown work.
